Sew Retro – A Look at Sewing History

September 24, 2010 by LindaG

The sub-title on this Judi Ketteler book says it all–a Stylish History of the Sewing Revolution. If you’ve sewn since childhood and are of a certain age, it’s a step back through time–from the early sewing patterns to the invention of Velcro fasteners, and the day when 30 million American women sewed. Filled with wonderful pictures of sewing things past and a few quirky illustrations to go with them, Sew Retro is a look from the 1920s to current events in sewing history. The best part–there are 25 vintage-inspired projects, but with a modern-day twist. Look for the June Cleaver apron, a flapper hat, groovy patchwork throw, and much, much more, divided into decade-specific chapters. Lots of fun sewing facts and interviews with key sewing industry folks interspersed. A pocket of full-size patterns is included. Whether you buy it for the projects, or for the sewing history–it’s fun either way. 144 pages.
